I’ve always been a bit wary of auto repair and maintenance shops. In general, I think there are just too many ways that they can rip you off. About five years ago I went to a Jiffy Lube shop for a quick oil change – but I got more than I expected. The shop mechanic also highly recommended a change in my transmission fluid. He showed it to me and said it was too green. I told him that a just had it changed a week ago. End of story – end of Jiffy Lube for me. Now, some may say I am being to harsh on auto mechanics, but I don’t think so. I think it is really hard finding an honest one. The dealers seem to be always overcharging and it seems to me to their benefit to do a less than optimal job, seeing as that they get new business the faster my car is run into the ground. Why else would my dealer recommend changing oil every 15000 miles. Well, enough of my complaining. Here is a video link to a NBC TV news consumer feature, that catches the guys at Jiffy Lube red-handed. And note, this is not just one spot. The majority of the sites charged money without ever doing any work. Even my cynical self was shocked.
